Barley Beta-Glucan

Beta-glucan is a soluble fiber that can be found in barley, oats and certain types of mushrooms & seaweed. The health benefits of beta-glucan has long been established for decades and backed by claims from the US FDA and Europe's EFSA on its positive effects on heart health, cholesterol and glycaemic control, gut immunity and weight management.

 

How this works is that consumption of barley beta-glucan slows the passage of food in the human gut as it increases the viscosity of the intestine and binds onto bile acids, meaning less is absorbed by the liver.  Our bodies unfortunately do not naturally produce beta-glucan so we need to obtain this from our diet.
